Weekend Challenge: Focus Over Flash

How to Build a Stronger Mental Game

Hey athletes and parents,

Every weekend is a chance to level up—not just in skill, but in mindset. This week’s focus is on "Focus Over Flash"—choosing to dial in on what matters most, instead of chasing what looks good on the outside.

For Athletes: Your Weekend Challenge

Challenge: The “1-Second Rule”

This weekend, during your games, training, or pickup runs, practice this rule:

“When something goes wrong, give yourself 1 second to react—then reset and move forward.”

  • Miss a shot? 1 second. Reset.

  • Get called for a foul? 1 second. Reset.

  • Turn the ball over? 1 second. Reset.

  • Swung at a bad pitch

  • Dropped a fly ball

The goal is to train your brain to stop dwelling on mistakes and move into the next play with full focus. Great players don’t avoid mistakes—they recover fast.

Bonus: Keep track of how many times you use the “1-Second Rule.” You’ll be surprised how often your mind tries to stay stuck. Training your response is training your superpower.

For Parents: This Week’s Tip

Tip: Model Reset Behavior

Just like athletes get frustrated, so do parents—especially in competitive environments. This weekend, model the same “1-Second Rule” for your athlete. If you feel yourself getting upset at a ref’s call, a coaching decision, or your child’s performance, try this:

  1. Pause for 1 second.

  2. Take a breath.

  3. Reset your energy before reacting.

Your calm presence teaches them what real composure looks like. They’re always watching—even when it seems like they’re not.

Let’s win the weekend mentally.
Small shifts. Big impact. See you next week!
