Mastering the Art of Controlling the Controllables: Lessons from Working with High Performers and Elite Athletes.

In the realm of sports psychology, one of the most profound lessons often learned is the importance of controlling the controllables. This concept transcends the boundaries of sports, seeping into various aspects of life. Through my experiences working with high performers, college and professional athletes, I've come to realize that what distinguishes the best from the rest is their unparalleled ability to maintain extreme control over their focus.

Top players have a journey that epitomizes the transformative power of mastering this principle. Like many athletes, players can initially struggle with managing their focus. Reactions to unfavorable situations on the court can lead to manifestation of lack of control—frustrations, negative emotions, and disruptive behaviors plagued player performances. However, through collaboration and mental training, players can begin to grasp the crucial distinction between what they can control and what they can’t.

The pivotal shift occurs when players internalized the mantra: "Just because you feel a certain way doesn't mean you need to act that way." This simple yet profound insight should become the cornerstone of mental fortitude. Rather than allowing emotions to dictate actions, basketball players need to exercise control over their responses. Players need to focus on controllable aspects such as self-talk, body language, and maintaining a resilient mindset, while adopting a mindset of letting go—'flushing'—factors beyond their control, such as referee decisions, team mistakes, or even not playing up to their own expectations in any given game.

By redirecting focus towards the controllables, players will exhibit a newfound poise, control, and confidence on the court. Realizing the true power behind controlling what a player can actually control and disregarding what is out of their control will lead to a much higher level of success and put the players focus to unbreakable levels.

In essence, controlling the controllables serves as a poignant reminder that excellence isn't solely defined by innate talent or external circumstances. Rather, it's rooted in one's ability to harness the power of focus and channel it towards what truly matters.
